If you're just starting out I'd stick to the rated ISO - pushing/pulling films is to me a slightly more advanced technique. I prefer Ilford

Learn More12/9/2022 · HP5 Plus pushed to 1600 is gorgeous. You might remember the times I’ve taken Kodak T-Max P3200 to Chicago for some night photography. I think HP5 Plus at 1600 looks leagues better than P3200 at 3200. I plan to take HP5 Plus on my next trip to Chicago and see how it handles the night. Learn MoreHP5 @ 1600 in DD-X is quite nice. Still, my first choice would be to push HP5 in XTOL, which will give you better shadows (but more grain). Since you're shooting 4x5, I don't think grain is too much of a concern. I've never used Microphen, though I imagine the results would be somewhere between DD-X and XTOL.
